The Goal:
Paper Mate (a large office supply manufacturer) partnered with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation as well as the Canadian Nursing Student Association to raise awareness of Breast cancer and collect funds for Breast cancer research, education, and awareness programs.

During the month of October over 20,000 Papermate Pink Flexgrip Elite pens along with bookmarks containing information from the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation was given to Canadian Nursing Student Association (CNSA) members across Canada. In addition a 'Write for Hope' banner provided by Paper Mate was given to these schools, including Kwantlen University College, so students could write inspiring messages of hope and sign the banner in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness month and to show their support for taking preventative actions to decrease the number of incidents nationwide.
Paper Mate has promised to donate $5000 to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation if the CNSA generates 5000 signatures nationwide.

Kwantlen University College holds the only school of nursing in Western Canada that participated in this event. The nursing students at Kwantlen therefore had an even greater challenge in recruiting more people to support this campaign. However, the Kwantlen Student Nurses Association (KSNA) was able to fulfill the goal.
The Task:
Promoting breast cancer awareness was our task in this campaign. We displayed the banner at various locations on campus and visited nursing classes to add more signatures to the banner. As crowds of people signed the banner it gave us an opportunity to share our knowledge with them and hopefully inspire women (and men) to be more self-aware.
Initiating Change:
After graduation, nursing students like ourselves, will be important members of the Canadian Health Care system. We will be in a position to help educate more women to be breast aware as 1 in 9 women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer during her lifetime (Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, 2007). We understand that the process of change is gradual and the 'Write for Hope' campaign was a single way to help raise awareness, inspire women to get tested, bring hope to those who are sufferers, and honour breast cancer survivors and loved ones who we've lost.
