"The thoroughness and organization of the course content demonstrates the instructor’s familiarity and expertise in the course topics. The course certainly was quite different from the usual academic approach. The hands on approach provided by the exercises, journaling and the project kept the course more interesting than on-line CE courses that provide only readings and a multiple choice post test. I will say that the course was more rigorous than I might have expected. This is good because it required a definite commitment and guaranteed that I learned a lot. I am confident that I have a solid base from which to take the certification exam.

The Moodle course management was very easy to use. The content layout was well organized. I particularly liked the Activities quick links on the left and used this section a lot to keep organized and to manage my progress with the various assignments for the modules.

. When I compare the course content to the Informatics test content outline from ANCC, this course definitely covers all the relevant information. This is my first experience with distance learning and pursuing a full on-line course except for 1-hour CEU offerings. It has taken me a little over 3 months to complete which is not bad for 13 modules. The self-paced approach has been beneficial since I was able to work very quickly in some content areas and to slow down when I needed to put more effort into the course or need time away. Some of the content was familiar to me while some was unfamiliar and unlikely that I would have delved into the area o my own. As I progressed through the course, I became more comfortable with journaling, which was a new experience for me. This course has helped ground me as I have switched careers from OR management to IT Clinical Analyst. It has prepared me well for completing my goal of certification." - M. G.

"This course definitely met my expectations. I very much appreciated the wide range of topics that were covered. I had tended to be lock into my own little world of nursing informatics in which I work on a daily basis, and I needed to broaden my definition of nursing informatics as well as my knowledge base of many other aspects of the role of a nursing informaticist.

I found the online course management system very easy to use. I never had any problems with downloading or uploading materials. I really enjoy the independence that is afforded when using online courses that do not have set deadlines. I think the curriculum content definitely covers a wide range of topics related to nursing informatics. I took this course to prepare for the ANCC credentialing examination, and I feel it was a very good presentation of the materials that I need to study for this exam. No suggestions for improvement.

I have been very pleased with the learning experiences I have had in this course. I have exposed myself to applications which I probably would not have done otherwise. I have developed relationships in the educational arena that will definitely be an asset in the future and hopefully improve the curriculum content of our nursing school related to nursing informatics. I have also developed an interest in becoming a member of a national nursing informatics group and attending future conferences to keep myself current on what is happening in the world of nursing informatics in other areas of the country and world. I intend to subscribe to a nursing informatics journal and attempt to stay better informed about my new nursing specialty. "The number of relevant articles for each lesson demonstrated that the instructor/designer is in tune with what is going on out there in Nursing Informatics (NI) both in education and practice. The number of topics covered provided a well rounded overview of the scope of NI. The varied types of assignments helped me as a learner to focus on key elements of the lessons. The focus on the many competencies needed in NI and the guidance on how to assess what competencies I have, what level competence I am at and encouragement to improve these and identify others.

Before I took this course I had a very one dimensional view of Nursing Informatics based on my personal experience with electronic health record implementation. Now I have a much broader and more exciting view of Nursing Informatics and the possibilities for the profession and for me. I am almost overwhelmed by all of the areas to explore in this field and am looking forward to continuing to learn and develop competencies in Nursing Informatics.

This course exceeded my expectations in many ways. First, the many self-study continuing education programs that I have experienced have been mostly read this and take the test which is not the best method for learning to stick. Second, I liked the constructionist method of study because I enjoy creating my own learning. Third, this course challenged me to learn new technologies and to put them into practice now. Fourth, the course forced me to think about where I have been, where I am at and where I want to go which is very valuable exercise and not an activity we often engage in or encouraged to pursue. And lastly, this course helped me to see the possibilities of what Nursing Informatics can do to improve nursing and how I have so many options to be a part of this movement.

My experience in this course was that it was a very robust and action packed introduction to NI and was a great deal of work. However, I learned a lot and more than that learned how much I did not know which may have been the more important lesson. It has inspired me to continue my NI education and earn my MS in NI and to pursue a teaching career in the future. Having taken this course has helped me to realize new and innovative ways to help the nurses and other healthcare professionals that I work with implementing electronic medical records. I look forward to continuing to work on improving and adding new competencies to my NI toolkit and helping nurses to learn and embrace the power and pleasure of using informatics in their patient care." - B.
