Nursing Informatics Questions and Answers
Questions From Readers

In this section, questions sent in by readers and visitors to the main Nursing Informatics web site are featured. I encourage you to ask questions that you would like to see printed in subsequent issues of this ezine. Go to the Contact Page to submit yours!

Q: I am interested in seeking Nursing Informatics Certification (initial, not renewal) through the ANCC. I have been told that for the initial certification, the contact hours do not need to be through an ANCC approved provider. Do you know of nurses who have applied your contact hours towards the contact hours requirement for certification?

The courses in the NI Learning Center are very robust in both theory and content. They are also fully customizable: besides the general theory taught to all students, each individual student chooses which competencies they wish to work on throughout the course assignments. These can easily be tailored to address the specific content of the ANCC outline (or any content taught internationally). I am also currently seeking CE approval through a prominent US Nursing Board, which when approved, will improve their compatibility with these formal requirements.

Q. I would like to request permission to use your P.A.T.C.H. self-assessment with my students. Is this possible?

Yes, most definitely. In fact, I have just created an online version of the P.A.T.C.H. which your students can take on the computer: the quiz is scored by the Moodle software for ease of use. Just go to the Learning Center at nursing-informatics.com/courses/, then scroll down to NI Self Assessment, and click on "Self Assessment Work Area". Choose a user id and password and you're all set. This feature is free to use.

I created the P.A.T.C.H. (Pretest for Attitudes Toward Computers in Healthcare) in 1996 to help my students explore their feelings about learning to use computers both in education and healthcare. This scale focuses on attitudes and feelings about using computers in the practice setting. You may download a paper copy to complete by hand in the Competencies Plan section HERE . Or, you can click on the following image to securely complete and score the assessment scale online.
