Several artists have answered the following two questions to contribute to an ongoing dialogue about the creation of cyberart. The questions addressed were:

1. How does usiing a computer help you to either create or share your art with the world?

Using my computer to create art has opened a whole new world for me. The very thought of being able to instantly exhibit my work to the entire cyber community is mind boggling to me - feels delightful! It has given me a cost effective, instant and very diverse medium to show my work on a global scale.

My computer helps me share my art with the world.

I dabbled in mediums like painting, drawing, and stained glass before my first computer, but I am not completely dependent on computers both for creating art and for getting it seen.

I am sorry to say that showing my artwork on the computer seems to be pointless. I have been on at least 24 different sites for 3 years. I have recieved 3 e-mails in 3 years asking about my work. But on the other hand I have sold 3 paintings online. I feel thats still next to nothing, for all my efforts,

Using the computer helps to showcase my artwork by having as many links as you can find of quality sites and exchanging banners .That is the only advertising I do.

Through my web-site:

  • It makes 90% of my sales (predominantly US). It provides me with a customer base which I do not have locally.
  • By obtaining overseas clients it also gives me interaction with other countries. It provides a means for my clients to request their ideas for their commissioned art and therefore giving me new ideas from overseas.
  • It enables me to provide detailed information and photos of my art with closeup details and far more content than I could ever afford to print and post in catalogue format.
  • I also create customer specific sitelets with each commission. Customers watch day by day photographs of their artistic creation. It enables a 2 way interactive design process.

I also use the computer to:

  • Create computer generated designs for clients using Photoshop
  • Manage digital images and digital camera consisently
  • I use email daily to recieve online quote requests, interact wtih customers, arrange delivery procedures, interact with media.
  • I use MSExcel to estimate and manage costs of construction and materials.
  • I use MSWord to provide detailed quotes, letters and invoices to clients.
  • I use MYOB software to manage the overall business finances.

I use the internet to:

  • Research my design during compilation and component research.
  • Research competitive activity
  • Find and source new products, materials and technical data.
  • To access online banking when dealing with overseas clients.

Well, I'm neither a real artist nor do I use the web to display what I *do* create. But I do use it to send my creations to friends and family. The computer makes it so easy to send my pictures and other creations...I don't have to mail them and worry about damage or if they might get lost in the transfer. We can talk about them 'real time' and they can critique and enjoy with me.

For me, I am still a traditional fine artist. I have a tablet, which I plan to use for some animation work I have in mind, as well as some CAD design work.

As for using the computer to share, that has been the most wonderful aspect of being part of an online gallery. Not only have I the opportunity to finally have work seen, but there have been some other benefits as well.

The computer is a wonderful tool which allows me to freely experiment with images, colors, shapes, etc., without worrying about destroying the original image because the source file or files can be saved in various stages. It also frees me to take off in different directions when changing the image, allowing the mind and mouse to wander in a sea of digital paint. The result is often quite different from what was first intentioned. This keeps it fresh, and inviting. Though I will always love traditional painting and drawing, I greatly enjoy taking elements of my traditional work and merging them into new images.

I was trained in the fine Arts and now use a computer for all my artwork. I use Painter7 software which is real art media. it is an advantage to be able to save images, change images and to be able to print images. I have made editions of Fine Art prints whic have been on show in America, London and in fact, anywhere I need to send.

The obvious advantage is the communication offered by email and by showing my art on my website. Many offers of exhibition have come through my website. I also do interviews with artists/photographers on the internet. I make tutorials for the internet. The growth of groups of people/magazines who use computers for digital art has made much more communication. Every person who has a computer in the world can tap in to a tremendous art source of inspiration and ideas.

2. What message do you wish to convey to the cyber community through your art? Have you had responses from viewers related to this message/your art? Were they what you expected?

My art is created for the intention of eliciting mystical and healing vibrations within viewers. The message I wish to convey is "Be ever hopeful - don't buckle to the stressors and ugliness of life. Connect with your center and walk with pride upon this Earth!" I've had many responses from viewers around the world, and all seem to reflect that my message has been heard. Many have commented that my work reflects dream and vision images they themselves have had. Their responses were what I expected and more!

Life belongs to those who are creative, because life is nothing but a long, eternal procession of creating more beauty, more truth and finally of creating your own being.

My art expresses the beauty of nature and its calming influence. I have had one response about my art, but it was not what I expected.

On the surface I wish simply to please. Below the surface I wish to enlighten, or at the very least loosen the consciousness of the viewer. I am unique in that I use the structure of my site much like a poet or novelist uses the structure of their larger works to enhance their message. I get my share of pleasing comments. I do not wish to impose a specific reaction. I merely wish to make an impression, and sometimes I do.

No message to convey, only hope that others will enjoy my artwork and all the other artists that I have links to.There have been many that have signed my guestbook in appreciation to my site.I was surprised, so many really like my work, it is very encouraging.

Color is fun - being eclectic and individual acceptable - that fine art is not limited to rich people and bland walls ... it can be functional too. I get feedback all the time - they think our art is fantastic, unique. I get a lot of encouragement. online - far more than I expected. I get a lot of sales online - far far more than I expected.

Considering I have two personal websites, one for fine art and one for architectural projection crafts, there are two visions. One to supply museum style dioramas to the gaming and appreciator market. The other, my true love, is to share my art with any like minded individuals that feel as I do, or have an appreciation for fantasy art and historical art. As much as I am an artist, I am a historian. It is through art that we have glimpsed and learned about past civilizations and cultures. Unlike oral traditions which often passed into shadows by the changes in time and mind, art is always there to remind us of what has passed, what invoked emotion, and what dreams we hold dear.

The very best response I received was a solicitation from a newspaper in Ireland who desired to use my image to celebrate the anniversary of subject piece. That was what I have always dreamed of, and the reason I created it to begin with. To share my respective interpretation of this great historical figure.

I keep diminished expectations in life, so as not to invite continual disappointment. I have had my art online for years, but only limited appreciation via electronic mail or personal critique. Times change, as do palates. But what I do, I do for me, and the thought of forced evolution of my creativity just to appease transitory tastes and fiscal yearnings have never been my motivation. Creating is as essential as breathing, and I respectfully need both.

I am not particularly interested in conveying any singular idea, rather I want each image to be a unique concept, or an obscure thought, which comes from within or from knowledge gained through literature or experience. Through exposure on the internet, exhibitions at conventions, and art faires, I have been able to display my work to the public.

The responses from people viewing my art has been one of the most extraordinary experiences of my lifetime. Many people have contacted me via email, often times with comments about my work, and sometimes interpretations of individual images. This is where I have felt the deepest connections with people, as their impressions often are what I was thinking when creating the image. Reaching out through email, guestbooks, and forums - complete strangers have reached out and touched me through my art. It is surprising, yet gratifying when someone connects with my work. I had not expected such bonds to exist, but I appreciate those who understand me.

Yes. I dont have a particular message but I find that many people read their own message into my work. They are interested in the astrological content of my work . Yes. I expected that. It is the same as having an exhibition in a real gallery. Some come and buy - many comment and discuss methods, content and techniques.
